Scuba Diving!

Recently, I’ve started scuba diving, working towards becoming an ‘Ocean Diver’. I’ve had two theory lessons, and two practical lessons, and I must confess it has blown all my preconceptions and thoughts about it out of the water (there’s a pun in there somewhere).

I knew I’d enjoy it, but I, naively considered it an extension of swimming, with you merely being able to stay underwater for longer. Two lessons later, and having not even strayed beyond the swimming pool so far, I have learnt that that view was embarassingly ignorant. It is definitely a discipline in its own right, with many skills and technique required. The seven-ish hours of theory lessons alone should demonstrate that.

It also opens many opportunities beyond swimming, and is definitely another string you can add to your bow for adventure travel. There are near endless opportunities for fantastic opportunity around the world, whether you’re interested in diving in some fantastic corals, through cave systems, among amazing animals, diving down low or even between tectonic plates! Whatever you do, I’m sure it will change your perspective. My view has changed already, and that’s just in the pool! I can’t wait to do some diving elsewhere.

The learning is really interesting – I love learning anyway, but especially where it’s interesting and may open up opportunities. Everything I’ve learnt so far is extremely relevant, and you can see how it will benefit your diving, and maybe even save your life! There’s been a great blend of practical and theoretical things under safe tuition with two students to one dive instructor.

So, it’s safe to say, I’m loving it! Thursday evening has become one of the highlights of my entire week! I’ll keep you updated with my progress as I work towards becoming an Ocean Diver!

If you’re interested in scuba diving, I’d recommend searching for a try-dive in an area near you. These are a great and cheap way to experience diving for the first time, and see if you’re interested in learning. The only warning I would give, is you may have an uncontrollable urge to come back for more!
